Local Events Around Camden

Camden is best known for its scenic beauty. Our lovely harbor and beautiful mountains draw thousands of visitors each year. However, Camden also offers an incredible array of year round events ranging from the Toboggan National Championship, to Pop Tech, to Christmas by the Sea.

The winter offers our one of a kind Winterfest with spectacular ice carvings glistening in the winter sun. The Toboggan National Championship is the only race of its kind and draws crowds from around the country. The two-day event takes place at the Camden Snow Bowl home to the 400 foot toboggan chute. People set up camp on the frozen lake and enjoy the thrill of the race, hot drinks, and good company.

Not all of the winter events take place outside, the Camden Conference is held every year in February at the beautiful Camden Opera House. Each year distinguished foreign policy experts come to discuss world affairs.

With the thawing of the ice, the melting of the snow and the first signs of spring, also comes Maine Maple Sunday, usually the third Sunday in March. People crawl out of the warmth of their homes to go and taste the year’s crop of maple syrup. Numerous venues open their facilities so that people can see how the syrup is made and then guests enjoy delectable maple syrup treats such as maple syrup muffins, waffles, butter, and cake.

With the arrival of summer the amphitheatre at the Camden Library becomes a theatre under the stars showing classic movies on Monday nights. The Bay Chamber concert series is in full swing with world renowned musicians playing at the Rockport Opera House and the Strand Theatre. The third weekend in July the Harbor Park turns into a museum of Maine artists during the Harbor Arts festival.

As summer leads to fall one of the most unique events occurs on Labor day weekend. The Camden Windjammer Festival is a truly entertaining event with activities for the whole family to enjoy. During the weekend there is an incredible windjammer boat parade, tours of the windjammers, music, dog contests and a spectacular fireworks display over the harbor.

In early October Camden plays host to the Camden International Film Festival. The film festival was created six years ago with the intention of bringing support and interest to independent documentary films. The festival draws directors, film critics, and audiences from across the country.

The second to last week in October Camden welcomes the PopTech conference. PopTech is a three day event that focuses on emerging technologies and the “newest and most cutting edge ideas that are helping to shape our collective future”. PopTech brings in some of the most progressive thinkers in science, technology, the arts, education, government and culture.

The first weekend of November the Camden Opera House opens its doors to a sophisticated group of authors during the Maine Literary Festival. Now going into its fifth year the Maine Literary Festival is a scholarship project of the Midcoast Branch of the American Association of University Women.

The first weekend of December, Camden turns into a storybook Christmas Village, with a spirited Christmas parade, the lighting of the tree in the Harbor park, Santa arriving by Lobster boat, caroling, sleigh rides and unique shopping.
With its eclectic events, Camden has something for everyone to enjoy at any time of the year.
