Food, Fun and Tons of Lobster (of course)!

With the days gradually getting shorter, people in Maine are outside making the most of each and every moment of summer. Festivals and fairs of every kind pack the weekends in towns across the state, celebrating food, art, music, film, Maine’s maritime heritage and much more.

One of the most popular and well-known festivals in our state is the annual Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland, the state’s largest festival dedicated to Maine’s signature seafood.

Now in its 66th year, the five-day event kicked off at 12 p.m. today and runs through Sunday, August 4. The opening night features the sea goddess coronation, and the festival includes everything from a big parade (attracting a crowd of up to 25,000 spectators) and a 10K road race to top local and national entertainment, crafts and vendors, tours of the U.S. Coast Guard station, cooking contests, carnival rides and a lobster crate race where contestants run across lobster crates floating in the water.

Headlining entertainment at this year’s event includes: The Preservation Jazz Hall Band, 1970s pop icon David Cassidy and The Spin Doctors.

One of the highlights of the Maine Lobster Festival is the opportunity to eat tons – and we do mean TONS – of freshly caught, freshly steamed Maine lobster. Each year, the Maine Lobster Festival draws about 100,000 visitors who eat more than 20,000 pounds of lobster! In fact, an hour into the festival today, volunteers had already steamed up 1,280 pounds!
The world’s largest lobster cooker is running at full steam, and you’re invited to come and join in on the fun. Whether it’s for a day, a weekend, or an entire week, come celebrate summer with us!
