Welcome Summer! Things to Do!

June 21, 2013

Happy summer everyone! With today being the Summer Solstice and the first official day of summer, we’re thinking about all of the wonderful things to do, see and experience in Maine this time of year. We are so lucky to live in an area where we truly get to experience the beauty and joy of each and every season to its fullest – and summer is no exception. In fact, this is the time of year that Maine truly shines!

What could be better than taking in a daysail on the waters of Penobscot Bay, touring one of the historic lighthouses in the area, going for a hike in Camden Hills State Park and enjoying the panoramic views from the top of Mount Battie, or even just relaxing by the ocean and savoring the freshest lobster around? It’s a quintessential New England summer at its finest, and we can’t think of a better way to spend a week – or even a weekend – away!

The Midcoast is also blessed with an abundance of festivals, concerts, and events to entertain young and old alike. Camden kicks things off with its Festival of Independence over the Fourth of July weekend. With four days of fun that includes concerts, family events, parades and fireworks (of course), it’s a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday. Many of the schooners even offer special Fireworks Sails on July 4th, a truly spectacular way to enjoy the festivities over the harbor.
In the weeks following the Fourth, visitors and enjoy everything from an antique car and aeroplane show at the Owls Head Transportation Museum and a small-town strawberry festival in Lincolnville on July 6, to the Maine Windjammer Parade on July 12 and the 20th annual North Atlantic Blues Festival in Rockland July 13-14. In between there are numerous garden tours, arts and crafts shows, specialty sails, and more.

No matter what you decide to do (or don’t do) while you are here, we promise that a Maine summer is sure to please!

The Summer Fun Continues

It’s so hard to believe that we’re already getting ready to celebrate the July 4th holiday. With a weekend full of events and activities – and sun in the forecast - we are looking forward to kicking off the summer in style. Camden and the surrounding towns will host four days featuring ‘the classics’ – with everything from concerts featuring many of America’s classic songs to gatherings of our classic tall ships as well as classic cars from the fifties and sixties.

If you happen to be visiting us for the Fourth of July holiday, be sure to check out http://mainedreamvacation.com/news/2013-festival-independence-four-days-fun-midcoast for a complete schedule of events.

In our last post, we talked a bit about some of the things to do here in July. Looking ahead, August brings an equal abundance of activities to enjoy and is the time when many of Maine’s festivals take place. In the Midcoast area, the 66th Annual Maine Lobster Festival will take place in Rockland the first week in the month (July 31-August 4) followed by the Union Fair a couple of weeks later (August 17-24). The world-famous Lobster Festival is one of the area’s great summer events, with tons of fresh steamed lobster to enjoy along with waterfront activities, arts and crafts, a parade, entertainment and more. The Union Fair and Maine Wild Blueberry Festival is a classic celebration of agriculture in the state with 4-H demonstrations, displays, music and entertainment, a talent show, a parade, Midway games and rides, and fireworks. With events celebrating everything from lobster and boats to blueberries and local agriculture, it’s an opportunity to experience classic Maine at its finest!

Along with the festivals and special events happening in the area, August also offers the perfect time to get out and explore the natural beauty of the Midcoast – whether by land or by water. With great daysails leaving out of Camden Harbor, the midsummer is a beautiful time to enjoy the calm waters of Penobscot Bay. Many of the schooners even offer specialty sails such as sunset sails, full moon sails, and even sails that include a traditional Maine lobster bake. Camden Premier Inns also offers a special Inn & Cruise Package along with the Maine Windjammer Association, that includes everything from inn accommodations to a backpack lunch featuring lobster rolls and local goodies, as well as an opportunity to enjoy some spectacular local views with either a two-day pass to Camden Hills State Park or a guided tour up Beech Hill.

The month closes out with the Camden Windjammer Festival and a full celebration of our local maritime heritage. Watch the magnificent tall ships and schooners sail into Camden harbor for a weekend of Labor Day fun that includes a build-a-boat contest, lobster crate races, pirates, boat open houses, talent shows and more.

Whether you enjoy lobster or lighthouses, sailing or sightseeing, hiking or harbor views, Camden offers something just for you, and August is the perfect time to celebrate summer with us!
