Celebrating winter in Maine
January 25, 2013
As we mentioned in our last post, there’s never a loss for things to do here –no matter what time of year you visit. Even when the temperatures drop below zero, we rise to the occasion and celebrate the beauty of the season. In fact, right now, the town of Camden is preparing for this weekend’s Winterfest event.
A true coming-together of community and neighbors to celebrate winter, Winterfest features ice skating in the amphitheatre, crafts for kids, food, live music, and the centerpiece of the event – a community ice carving, where community groups, schools, individuals and businesses carve incredible works of art the day of the event using the traditional tools of the ice-carving artisan. A great event for young and old, Winterfest gives us all an opportunity to celebrate our downtown area and parks, foster community spirit, and have a little fun despite the numbers on the thermometer!
Winterfest also serves as a kicking-off of sorts to a variety of winter activities here in Camden. In a couple of weeks, the Camden Snow Bowl will host the U.S. National Toboggan Championships on February 8-10. The U.S. National Toboggan Championships is the only organized wooden toboggan race in the country. More than 400 teams compete, and the event attracts up to 5,000 visitors every year. Participants come from all over the United States, and a few from other countries, to compete in two-, three-, and four-person teams. An incredible event for spectators as well, the Toboggan Championships feature a weekend full of events, including public tobogganing and tubing, food tents, music, a chili competition, and even bonfires to help keep you warm as you enjoy the festivities!
If outdoor activities aren’t your thing, then you can always enjoy a show at the Camden Opera House, dinner at one of our great restaurants, or simply relax and be pampered in one of our historic B&Bs. No matter which you choose, we know that you’ll have a great time, and we look forward to being your hosts. No matter what your interests are, we can always help you find the perfect way to celebrate your vacation – whether it’s a short weekend getaway or a lengthier weeklong visit.
Either way, come visit and join us in the celebration!
